A basic barbering course, consisting of 288 hours of training enabling a successful completer to meet the minimum requirements to take N.Y. State’s test for a Barber’s License. Passage of that test allows employment in the profession as a Master Barber.


What does the “practice of barbering” cover?


New York State law (Article 28 of the General Business Law) and Department of State rules (19 NYCRR) define acceptable practices. The practice of barbering means providing for a fee (or any consideration or exchange, whether direct or indirect) the following services upon the head of a human being:


  • shaving or trimming the beard or cutting hair;
  • giving facial or scalp massage with oils, creams, lotions or other preparations, either by hand or mechanical appliances;
  • singeing, shampooing, arranging, dressing or dyeing hair or applying hair tonic; and
  • applying cosmetic preparations, antiseptics, powders, oils, clays or lotions to scalp, face or neck.

Acceptable barbering practices do not include performing services for the treatment of disease or of physical or mental ailments.


ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS


Hair Academy accepts persons beyond the age of compulsory school attendance in New York (17) who have the ability to benefit from the training provided by the school. Persons 16 years of age may enroll provided they have written parental consent. All applicants must have a High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (a GED Certificate) or otherwise demonstrate the ability to benefit from the training. Applicants may demonstrate “the ability to benefit from training” by passing the Wonderlic “WPT” Test which is approved by the N.Y. State Department of Education. We can arrange for this examination to be administered in several languages to meet the needs, and assure the comfort, of those of our students who do not consider English their primary language.

This is an advance Barbering Course consisting of 660 contact hours designed to enable a successful graduate to meet all the requirements to take the N.Y. State test for a Barber License. Passage of this test permits employment in the barber industry as a master barber.

The Hairdressing and Cosmetology Course consists of 1,000 hours and trains successful graduates to meet the requirements and to take and pass the State test for a License.


Passage of this test allows employment as a cosmetologist, hairdresser, natural hair stylist, manicurist, esthetician or waxing specialist.


What does the practice of Cosmetology cover?


The practice of Cosmetology includes providing the services of natural hair styling, esthetics, nail specialty and waxing and also includes providing services to the hair, head, face, neck or scalp of a human being, including but not limited to shaving, trimming, and cutting the hair or beard either by hand or mechanical appliances and the application of antiseptics, powders, oils, clays, lotions or applying tonics to the hair, head, or scalp, and in addition includes providing, for a fee or any consideration or exchange, whether direct or indirect, services for the application of dyes, reactive chemicals, or other preparations to alter the color or to straighten, curl, or alter the structure of the hair of a human being.


ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS


Hair Academy, Inc. accepts persons beyond the age of compulsory school attendance in New York (17) who have an ability to benefit from training provided by schooling. Persons 16 years of age may enroll provided they have a written parental consent. Applicant must have a High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (a GED Certificate) or otherwise demonstrate the ability to benefit from the training. Applicants may demonstrate their “ability to benefit from training” by passing a Wonderlic Basic Skills Test (WPT) which is approved by the N.Y. State Education Department, or the Basic Skills Test that has been approved by the United States Dept. of Education. We can arrange for this examination to be given in several different languages, to meet the needs, and assure the comfort, of those students who may not be proficient in English.

Classes are Monday to Friday from 10 AM to 3:30 PM (includes a 30 minute meal break)..


This is an advance Esthetics course consisting of 600 contact hours designed to enable a successful graduate to meet all the requirements to take the N.Y. State test for an Esthetician License. Passage of this test permits employment in the beauty industry as an Esthetician.


What does the practice of Esthetics cover?


The practice of Esthetics means providing services for a fee or any other consideration to enhance the appearance of the face, neck, arms, legs, or shoulders of a human being by the use of compounds or procedures including makeup, eyelashes, depilatories, tonics, lotions, waxes, or sanding and tweezing. They may be performed by manual, mechanical, chemical or electrical means and instruments, but shall not include the practice of electrology.

This course consisting of 250 contact hours designed to enable a successful graduate to meet all the requirements to take the N.Y. State test for a Nail Technician’s License. Passage of this test permits employment as a Manicurist and Pedicurist.


What does the practice of Nail Specialty cover?


The Practice of Nail Specialty means providing services for a fee or any other consideration to cut, shape or enhance the appearance of the nails of the hands or feet. Nail Specialty also includes the application and removal of sculptured or artificial nails.

This is a Natural Hair Styling course consisting of 300 contract hours designed to enable a successful graduate to meet all the requirements to take the N.Y. State test for a Natural Hair Stylist License. Passage of this test permits employment as a Natural Hair Stylist.


What does the practice of Natural Hair Styling Cover?


The practice of Natural Hair Styling means providing for a fee (or any consideration or exchange, whether direct or indirect), any of the following services to the hair of a human being: shampooing, arranging, dressing, twisting, wrapping, weaving, extending, locking or braiding the hair or beard by either hand or mechanical appliances. Such practice shall not include cutting, shaving, or trimming hair except that such activities are permissible to the extent that such activities are incidental to the practice of Natural Hair Styling. Such practice shall not include the application of dyes, reactive chemicals, or other preparations to alter the color or to straighten, curl, or alter the structure of the hair. Techniques which result in tension on hair roots such as certain types of braiding, weaving, wrapping, locking and extending of the hair may only be performed by a Natural Hair Styling or cosmetology licensee who has successfully completed an approved course of study in such techniques.

This is Waxing course consisting of 75 contact hours designed to enable a successful graduate to meet all the requirements to take the N.Y. State test for a Barber License. Passage of this test permits employment in the beauty industry as a Waxing Specialist.


What does the practice of Waxing cover?


The practice of Waxing means providing for a fee (or any consideration or exchange, whether direct or indirect), services to enhance the appearance of the face, neck, arms, legs, or shoulders of a human being by the removal of hair by the use of depilatories, waxes or tweezing. The practice of Waxing does not include the practice of electrology.


PRACTICE OF WAXING


Effective January 1, 1999, the practice of waxing the face, neck, arms, legs, or shoulders of a human being to remove hair by the use of depilatories, waxes or tweezing is illegal when practiced without a license.
